I usually never take progress photos. Like many other artists, I enter a "zone" when I begin working on something and to break out of it would interrupt my creative flow and concentration. With Mr. Pointy, two factors encouraged me to record the steps to completion:

1. As a commission, it felt important to show my client the work being done so that I could receive feedback and suggestions.

2. I was carving outside in winter. Unlike the summer days when I’d work on wands, I couldn’t just finish it in one go. With the cold weather and short days, I had limited time for each carving session. This allowed me ample time to take photos in between.

I’d really like to make progress photos a habit, but because of my style of working, I really can’t make myself any promises. I do hope that this satisfies the curiosity of those who wonder about how I work. I think there might be 3 of you.

At the risk of being labeled strange, I'd like to share a thought I had while carving this. If a toddler held Mr. Pointy during an earlier stage of his carving, it could pass as a little club. Like what giants use for battle... except tiny.
