Description

"I've been marked."

Here is my completed Death Eater costume.

For the past month or so, I've been working on it in secret. I had timed progress so that I would finish by FanExpo 2010. I spent most of the time working on the homemade mask (I have a link below to my deviation featuring a closer look). I successfully managed to get everything together with just a day or two to spare. I premiered the my death eater at the convention and received many compliments from hardcore fans, children and enthusiasts-of-creepy-sh*t alike. Though I am ridiculously proud of how it turned out, I will likely improved and redesign aspects to further mimic the death eaters as seen in the films.

The mask is made with a white plastic mask as a base then layered with newspaper mache and painted with acrylics. The paper mache part alone took nearly forever since I needed to shape the jaw and cranium beyond the base. Waiting for paper mache to dry when you're itching to get it done is torture.

The robe was made with a very flowy cloth that I found at the fabric shop nearby for a discounted price (I love end pieces). Fortunately, I've done a robe before, so figuring out the shape and such wasn't as difficult as it would've have been. I was rushing it a bit so it didn't have the shape I wanted initially, but I'm still happy with how it turned out. I'm going to modify the hood a bit and have something to adhere it to my mask a bit because while walking around or standing still in the wind, it would easily slip off.

The rest of the outfit consists of a pair of black slacks, black socks, black shoes, a black shirt that was painted to look like the stylized tunics worn by death eaters in the flicks, black hobo gloves, two belts (one practical for my pants and another for aesthetic reasons), and finally a wand holster on my left (you can't see it very well in the pic but some people were impressed that I had one).

And that's it. Not bad for a first HP cosplay, yeah?

Comments are very much appreciated!
